Chapter Twelve

Mez pulled up at Changing Faces barbershop on

Fayetteville Street, and AB dialed a number. He spoke

briefly and ended the call.

Mez parked and tapped on the steering wheel

nervously. “How well do you know this dude?”

“Man, I know him. Been knowing him since oh-four.

He’s straight.”

“Great!” he said sarcastically. “Four whole years.”

“You think I’ma run you up on a snag?”

“Not inten…. I just ain’t trying to go back to prison.”

“Shi-it, like I am? Here he comes now.”

Mez saw a man with a fresh fade come out of the

barbershop, scanning the parking lot coolly. He saw AB

waving for him to get in, and proceed. “What’s up?”

“Chilling. This is my man, Mez, the one I was telling

you about.”

The man extended his fist. “Bay Bay.”

“What’s up?”

“So, you trying to hook up with my man, huh?”

“Yeah. You think you can make it happen?”

Bay Bay laughed. “Everybody’s trying to get their

hands on that Man Eater, and I’m the only bridge to it.”

“So, what do you want?”

Bay Bay sat back in the seat smiling. “Something

light.”

Randy Hughes poked out his chest as he walked the

yard with his fellow S.I.S. Officer, John Nelson. Inmates

stopped what they were doing to see what brought them

around. Randy loved the attention and the nervous

expressions that their presence brought.

Officer Nelson loved it too. “I’ve been an S.I.S. Officer

for two years, and I tell you, the overwhelming feeling never

wears off.”

“Feels good, don’t it?”

“Better than sex.”

“Almost,” Hughes said, thinking about Minnie.

“Tell me something, Hughes.”

“Shoot.”

“How does it feel to kill somebody?”

Randy thought about the question thoroughly before

answering. He had known John for a little over a year and

never got any bad vibe about him, so he felt safe to discuss

the subject with him. “First, you must understand that killing

is something permanent. It’s something that’s done when all

other remedies have failed. So, when I seen the guy stab

Joseph, I knew that I had to represent for the Bureau of

Prisons. And the truth be told,” he said lowering his voice,

“It felt totally awesome choking the life out of him.

Especially when I rammed his face on the corner of the

locker.”

John shivered. “Nobody can say that you didn’t

represent either. But I don’t…” he trailed off and stared at

some old Cubans playing bocce ball.

“What? Say what you was about to say.”

“Never mind. I don’t want my views to cause trouble

for me. I need this job.”

“Come on, John. It’s been established that whatever

we say goes no further than us, right?”

“Uh… ri… right.”

“Then say what you were about to say, for Christ

sakes.”

“I… I was just saying that I… I don’t think I would’ve

risked my life for… Joseph.”

Randy’s eyebrow raised. “Why wouldn’t you?”

“Because he was a lousy son of a bitch, that’s why. I

invited that dead cocksucker into my home, and three

months later I found out that he was screwing my wife!”

“I swear to God I wouldn’t pay that shit if I was you!”

AB said, lighting a cigarette.

Mez took his eyes off the road. “Put that out; ain’t no

smoking in here.”

He took a deep drag and threw the cigarette out the

window. “My fault.
